The "Verband kommunaler Unternehmen e.V." (VKU) has a lot to offer as the leading association of the municipal economy - both to its members and to the public. VKU represents over 1,460 municipal enterprises in the fields of energy, water/wastewater, waste management and telecommunications. What seems self-evident in everyday life is actually a huge achievement on the part of the companies: For example, the municipal companies generate 66 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year, dispose of 31,500 tonnes of waste every day, supply 121 litres of drinking water per citizen every day and provide 5.7 million customers with broadband.

Content strategy and restructuring.

If you want fast internet, you not only need a fast website, but also a modern, state-of-the-art navigation structure that makes content quickly available to users via several channels. The processes are set up with the customer in mind, and the content is selected to suit the target group. wegewerk worked with VKU to develop a content strategy and restructure the site's content. The challenge was to reduce the number of menu levels and to restructure the large amount of content via horizontal networking. The result: The goal is reached with just a few clicks. Users are guided through the VKU's offerings in a targeted and interest-driven manner.

Category- and Keyword-System.

Navigation through the website is made easier thanks to a category and keyword system that wegewerk developed specifically for this purpose. In this way, the target groups can be picked up via their interests and provided with further information, contact persons and materials through thematic connecting points.

Global topics of the VKU, such as the energy turnaround, digitalisation or public welfare, are given concrete references for action through the new preparation and direct linking with reports from sectors and through the linking with the respective contact persons.

Topic pages not only provide an overview, but also a direct link to publications, industry news and viewpoints.

In addition to the content strategy, wegewerk is also responsible for the new design and technical implementation of the website and the new member area with the content management system TYPO3. Great attention was paid to the use of the site with different end devices (responsive design) and to an editorially simple handling for numerous editors/users.
